As we faced a major obstacle that prevented us from moving forward, we began to reflect on another problem the city was facing, such as blackouts. In the 80s, the city of Lascahobas had a 24/7 electricity supply. However, in 2020 there was almost no electricity in the city, which created a lot of darkness at night that caused dishonest acts such as the rape of women and theft of people’s phones in the public square to be repeated. Shaky Joseph proposed installing solar lamps in the public square, a proposal supported by the entire board committee at the time. Therefore, the board members contributed funds to purchase 17 lamps to install on the 17 poles available in the space at the time. The people in charge of purchasing and installing these lamps were Shaky Joseph and Winston Florestal. These installations were carried out in a single day; the lighting installed in the space brought great joy to the population. That same evening, the youth organized a Basketball tournament on the square to celebrate the installation of the lamps. After the committee saw the significant impact that installing the lamps on the square had on the population, we decided to expand the project throughout the city. With the assistance of Gaetan Lindor, who is part of the local committee and who took responsibility for monitoring the number of electric poles throughout the city center, about 250 electric poles, from “Verdun” to “Figuier”, we decided to ask people from Lascahobas living abroad, especially in the United States, to contribute to help us buy 150 lamps at the rate of 1 lamp for every 2 poles. After adding areas without regular electric poles, such as Fortuna Avenue, we ended up installing a total of 180 lamps throughout the city. This project took 3 years to complete due to a lack of funds and the difficulties of sending the lamps to Haiti amid the country’s ongoing political instability. 

In 2023, after much discussion of Archange Thelemaque’s proposal for a new project to send children in need to school, the executive committee approved funding for the schooling of 10 children in the community whose parents could not afford to send them to school. This experience made us realize that, in addition to school assistance, these children had additional needs, such as food, shoes, socks, shirts, underwear, etc. With the help of several community members, SOSL sent 27 children to school in 2024. In 2025, the number jumped to 32 children in Lascahobas who benefited from these same benefits. Since the launch of this project in 2023, SOSL has already organized 3 Christmas parties for the children, where they have the chance to sit together with local volunteers to eat, drink, sing, recite poetry, and receive gifts thanks to the generosity of kind-hearted people in the community.

The real goal of this project is for SOSL to secure land to build a school with modern infrastructure that offers children and youth in the community a quality education. This modern school will offer young people solid academic and professional training, allowing them to have a profession after completing their classical education. SOSL needs the support and collaboration of everyone in the community for this dream to become true.
