A Community Rich in History
Long before European settlement, the fertile valleys surrounding Lascahobas were home to the Taíno people, who cultivated the land and established thriving agricultural communities. Their connection to the region laid the foundation for a place that has supported generations through its rich natural resources.
Founded in 1763 by Spanish settlers as Las Caobas, meaning “The Mahogany Trees,” the town quickly became an important frontier settlement because of its strategic location. During the Haitian Revolution, Lascahobas played a significant role as revolutionary forces moved through the region, helping shape Haiti’s journey toward independence.
Following Haiti’s independence in 1804, the town continued to serve as a vital border community, connecting people, commerce, and cultures between Haiti and the eastern part of the island. This unique history has created strong cultural ties that continue to define the region today.
Despite facing economic challenges, natural disasters, and periods of political instability, the people of Lascahobas have remained resilient, preserving their heritage while looking toward the future with determination.

Local farmers continue to cultivate coffee, sugar cane, tobacco, sisal, fruits, vegetables, and livestock, sustaining both families and the local economy. Weekly market days remain vibrant gathering places where neighbors connect, trade goods, and celebrate their community.
